Webflow or Next.js: which technology for your website?

You've decided to give your business a website worthy of its reputation. One question comes up in every project: which technology should you build it on? Two names dominate the conversation — Webflow and Next.js. You're sometimes told that one is "modern" and the other "outdated," or the other way around. That's a mistake. Both solutions are excellent; they simply answer two different philosophies. Choosing the right one means understanding what truly matters to you: keeping control of your content, or prioritising performance and mastery of your data? One puts your independence at the heart of the project; the other, performance and the sovereignty of your information. Neither is universally superior — the only one that counts is the one that fits your reality. Let's break it down, without the jargon.

Two philosophies, not two levels of quality

Let's start by dismissing a false debate. Neither Webflow nor Next.js is "better" in absolute terms. You can build a beautiful, fast and well-ranked website with either one. The real difference lies in how your website lives once it's online: who updates it, where its data is hosted, and how often it changes. These three questions — autonomy, sovereignty and the pace of change — are enough on their own to guide almost every decision. Let's take them one at a time.

Webflow: independence above all

Webflow is an American CMS that has done a great deal to modernise website creation. Its main strength comes down to one word: independence. Thanks to its visual editor, you edit your website yourself, directly in your browser, without writing a single line of code. Changing a text, swapping a photo, publishing a news post, adding a page: it all happens in a few clicks, whenever you want and without a middleman. A typo spotted on a Sunday evening, a promotion to announce urgently: you fix it in two minutes, without depending on anyone's schedule.

For a business whose content changes often — news, promotions, job openings, regular articles — this is a considerable asset. You don't depend on anyone for a small last-minute correction. And if you'd rather not handle it, nothing forces you to: we can take care of the maintenance for you. With Webflow, independence is an option offered, never a constraint imposed.

The point to watch concerns hosting. Webflow hosts websites on servers located in the United States. Your data — and that of visitors who fill in a form — therefore travels outside Switzerland. For many activities, this poses no difficulty at all. But for a brand particularly sensitive to the confidentiality and sovereignty of its data, it's a criterion to weigh carefully. We come back to it below, because it's often decisive.

Next.js: performance and sovereignty

Next.js, by contrast, is a fully bespoke development technology. Here, there's no template and no limit: your website is designed specifically for you, with maximum finish and performance. It's the path of the fully high-end, the one chosen by businesses for whom every detail matters and who want a perfectly controlled image.

The most important difference, however, comes down to hosting. We deploy our Next.js websites in Switzerland, with Infomaniak, on 100% Swiss infrastructure. Your data stays on Swiss soil, which greatly facilitates compliance with the new data protection law (nFADP). For a brand mindful of its clients' confidentiality, this is a strong argument — sometimes even a requirement. Where other solutions impose extra steps to bring data back to Switzerland, Next.js builds in this principle from the very first line of code.

In return, a Next.js website doesn't offer self-service editing: changes go through us. We're talking about maintenance handled 100% by the agency. This isn't a flaw, but a choice of model: you entrust the updates to us and you keep, at all times, a flawless website, without ever having to touch the technical side or fear a wrong move.

This approach is ideal when your website changes little: an institutional showcase, a presentation of your company, a few stable pages that change once or twice a year. You then enjoy the best of both worlds — maximum performance and data hosted in Switzerland — without being hindered, in your day-to-day, by the absence of self-service editing.

The decisive criterion: where does your data live?

As soon as your website collects information — a contact form, a newsletter sign-up, an order — the question of hosting deserves a pause. Your clients entrust you with personal data; its confidentiality is part of the trust they place in you. Hosting in Switzerland, like the one Next.js allows via Infomaniak, guarantees that this data doesn't leave the territory and remains subject to Swiss law. Webflow, hosted in the United States, remains perfectly usable — but requires you to check what you collect and to inform your visitors clearly about it. If data sovereignty is non-negotiable for you, the scales tip clearly towards Next.js. It's also a key point for any use of AI, as we explain in our article on AI and automation in business.

The other criterion: how often will your website change?

Ask yourself honestly. Are you going to publish content every week, update your offers, feed a blog yourself? Or will your website stay broadly stable, with only a few occasional adjustments during the year? If you want to keep control day to day, Webflow's independence makes complete sense. If your website is a stable showcase and you'd rather delegate the rare changes, Next.js will offer you superior quality and peace of mind. There's no shame in choosing simplicity: a business that updates its website three times a year has no need for a self-service editor, whereas a very active organisation will be glad of one every week. The right technology isn't the most fashionable one: it's the one that fits the way you work.

Budget and timeline: what to expect?

It's impossible to approach this choice without talking about money and timeline — two criteria every business leader has in mind. Here again, the two approaches differ clearly. A Webflow website is generally quicker to launch and more accessible at entry: the visual editor speeds up production, and since you then take over the updates, recurring costs stay contained.

A Next.js website, fully developed to measure, requires a higher initial investment and a slightly longer design timeline. That's the price of a finish and a performance without a ceiling, coupled with sovereign hosting in Switzerland. Since changes go through the agency, the budget is thought of over time, with controlled and predictable maintenance. Neither option is "expensive" or "cheap" in absolute terms: it all depends on what you place in the balance between independence, standards and data sovereignty. A clear quote, drawn up after an initial conversation, will give you concrete figures suited to your real situation. Finally, keep in mind that a website isn't a one-off expense, but an asset: well thought out, it brings you clients for years.

And what about search rankings in all this?

Good news: both technologies make it possible to reach excellent positions on Google. What matters for search rankings isn't the name of the tool, but the quality of the build: loading speed, clear structure, relevant content. A well-built Webflow website and a carefully crafted Next.js website are on equal footing here. We go into detail on the subject in our guide to local SEO in French-speaking Switzerland.

In both cases, the support makes the difference

One last point, often underestimated: whatever technology you choose, it's the quality of the support that separates a good website from a forgettable one. The Webflow-or-Next.js choice is only part of the equation. Upstream, there's the framing of your objectives, the understanding of your business and its challenges; downstream, the content strategy, search rankings and long-term follow-up. The same technology can deliver a remarkable or a disappointing result depending on the hands that wield it. That's why we never start with the technical side: we start from your business, your clients and your ambitions, then we recommend the tool that will serve them best. Technology is only a means; your success remains the goal.

Three misconceptions to forget

This technology choice drags along its share of misconceptions. Three deserve to be corrected head-on.

  • "Next.js is necessarily overpriced and out of reach." False: it all depends on the scope. A Next.js showcase website, carefully crafted and well framed, remains a reasonable investment — and its Swiss hosting can justify the choice on its own.
  • "Webflow doesn't look professional enough." False: very large brands use it every day. Well mastered, it produces high-end, fast and elegant websites, hard to tell apart from a bespoke build.
  • "Once the choice is made, you're locked in for life." False: a website can be rethought and migrated. What matters is choosing what suits you today, not deciding for eternity.

Our recommendation, case by case

Rather than a universal winner, here are two simple markers to help you find your place.

Webflow is right for you if…

  • you want to be able to edit your website yourself, without depending on anyone;
  • your content changes often (news, blog, promotions, job openings);
  • hosting in the United States poses no difficulty for your data.

Next.js is right for you if…

  • you require hosting in Switzerland and uncompromising nFADP compliance;
  • your website is a stable showcase that changes little over the year;
  • you'd rather delegate the changes and aim for maximum performance.

Webflow or Next.js? The question has no single answer — it has yours. It depends on your relationship with content, your standards on data and the rhythm of your website's life. Many business leaders contact us convinced they need "the most modern" or "the cheapest" option; they leave with a far more accurate decision, grounded in their reality rather than a trend. That's precisely the role of our first conversation: to understand how you work so we can recommend the solution that will serve you best, today and in five years. No default choice, no ready-made answer — we'll tell you frankly what we would do in your place.
